Line 9, Shanghai Metro

Line 9 is a heavy rail line that runs mainly east-west on the Shanghai Metro network. The line runs from Songjiang New City in Songjiang District to Middle Yanggao Road in Pudong.

Introduction

The first phase of Line 9, from Songjiang New City to Guilin Road stations, opened on December 29, 2007. It uses the Bombardier Movia trains which are also used on Line 1.

Line 9 did not directly connect to the rest of the Shanghai Metro network until the opening of the Line 9 portion of the Yishan Road station on December 28, 2008^[1]. The station is an interchange between Line 3 and Line 4. A shuttle bus conveyed passengers between Guilin Road and Yishan Road stations until construction was completed.

In December 2009, the second phase of Line 9 (from Yishan Road to Century Avenue) was completed, providing passengers with a direct link from Songjiang District in the west to Pudong in the east without having to transfer to other lines.

Important Stations

• Songjiang University Zone- Many famous universities, such as Donghua University, Shanghai International Studies University, East China University of Political Science and Law, Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade are located at there.
• Sheshan - A famous tourist place, Mount She. The mountain is less than 100 meters but it is the highest mountain in Shanghai. The She Shan Observatory and She Shan Basilica are on the mountain.
• Qibao - A famous old town in Shanghai, with a tourist street named Qibao Old Street.
• Caohejing Development Zone - A high-tech park in the area.
• Xujiahui - A busy station with many shopping malls and office buildings in the vicnity. Passengers can transfer to Line 1.
• Century Avenue - A major interchange station between four lines: 2, 4, 6 and 9.

Future Plan

In the future, Line 9 will extend 14.5 km East to Caolu Town, introducing 8 new stations, and also 6.5 km South to Songjiang South Railway Station for Shanghai-Hangzhou Passenger Rail introducing 3 new stations. Both will be constructed between 2010-2020.^[2] The original plan to Chongming will use Line 19 instead.
